Troika Tuesday - You can do anything with this shit fr
Hello and welcome to the January 13 edition of Troika Tuesday. This is my first time straight up Troiking it on the public internet, thanks for coming along to check it out.
I come to Troika by way of Fighting Fantasy, although I heard of Troika first. I was put off by the chit pull for initiative. Now, I see the light. Also, I see that you can use simultaneous/phased like Fighting Fantasy does and that’s fine too.
I am currently working on a hack of the Fighting Fantasy lineage, pulling a lot from Troika. Troika probably the smoothest variation on these rules available right now, or at least it doesnt feature the Mounted Combat special skill requirements from Advanced Fighting Fantasy - those are a weird mess, if you ask me.
I havent finalized any changes to the core system, because I am finishing the setting and summarizing the adventure material before I am going to complete any rules hacking. It’s a matter of cart and wagon. With that said, here are some changes I know I am going to make:
Skill? Fuck off.
I find it sometimes confusing that there is Skill alongside Special Skills. As a result, Skill is called Ability and Special Skills are simply called Skills. Thanks go out to Tales & Tactics podcast for this one, I believe it was Troy who suggested this.
Point buy? Fuck off (mostly).
Advanced Fighting Fantasy uses a point buy system. Troika has randomized statistics and backgrounds. I think a good balance is in order here. I am not settled on the specifics, but I am sure Stamina will be randomized completely (12+3d6kl2 with some modifiers based on which kind of person you are playing). I will probably do Ability as 5+2d6kl1. I think there will be provision, where the lower the Ability, the greater points will be available to purchase Skills (for every point in Ability below 12, one point may be spent on Skills with a maximum of 3 points in any one skill)
Fuck? Luck off.
I am inspired by Luke Gearing’s boasts for a way to recover Luck. Make a vow in one of many god’s honour and they will smile upon you. I will include a list of gods and what they desire, as well as the punishment for shirking one’s vow.
One change to Luck is that the maximum is 12 for anyone, unless they are scorned.
Fate is always in flux, until it is written, and favour lost can always be regained elsewhere.
Oops! Fuck off.
I dont love the Oops! Table. I love the concept, but hate a lot of the results.
Also, I want magic tied specifically to scrolls written in ancient times. Only people with a certain Skill can memorize scrolls, though anyone who is literate can cast. Memory Points are equivalent to the Memorize Scroll skill x2.
Failure to cast properly results in loss of the scroll without it being cast and a fumble is always a seizure of different severity depending on the level of the scroll. This damages Stamina.
Yo? Fuck off.
The post is done, bro, get outta here.
